There are no bathtubs or showers in residents' rooms. Each unit has specially equipped bathing rooms, and Nursing staff assist each resident with baths or showers according to their assessed need.
Cable Television
All rooms have cable TV outlets. Arrangements to have the cable hooked up are made via the St. Michael's Centre Finance Department. Fees are the responsibility of the resident, and are added to the monthly billing statement.
Gift Shop
The St. Michael's Centre Auxiliary operates a gift shop for the use of residents and visitors. It is located just inside the main entrance and sells toiletries, snacks, and small gift items. Proceeds go towards Auxiliary fund-raising projects. The gift shop is open Monday - Sunday. Hours of operation are posted at the gift shop.
Hairdresser
A hairstylist comes to St. Michael's Centre 3.5 days a week. Appointments can be made through the Nursing Station. Residents are responsible for paying the fee for this service.
Library
The Pearl McPhee Library was established to provide a resource centre that is available to all staff and residents. St. Michael's Centre strives to create an atmosphere that is conducive to learning and endeavours to have available current and relevant information on all topics relating to the care of the elderly and in particular the health and well being of our residents and staff.
In addition to the library, a variety of general interest periodicals, books and newspapers are available throughout the facility at the Resident's Reading Table and in the lounge areas on A Wing. A mobile library service, provided by the Burnaby Public Library, also comes in once a month and provides a selection of reading materials, including large print and talking books.
Mail
The Executive Assistant receives all mail coming into St. Michael's Centre. Resident mail is sorted by the Receptionist and delivered by a resident volunteer to the residents' rooms.
Newspapers
Daily newspapers are provided to residents in the three main lounge areas. Residents may also have a personal newspaper delivered to their rooms, however the resident must cover the cost of this. Ordering of personal newspaper delivery is done through the Recreation staff.
Pharmacy
Some personal care items can be ordered by the RN on your Unit through the facility Pharmacy. Any items ordered will be delivered when medication deliveries are made. The resident is responsible for paying for any items purchased this way. The Centre will be invoiced by the Pharmacy and the Finance Department will pay the store on your behalf, then any charges will be added to your regular monthly billing statement. Room Cleaning
Housekeeping staff have a daily routine for each resident's room.
Telephone
All private and semi-private rooms have telephone jacks. The resident/family is responsible for arranging the installation of telephone services. All telephone costs, including moving a telephone from one room to another, are the responsibility of the resident. BC Tel will send the monthly bill directly to the resident.
Trust Account
The Receptionist will maintain a Trust Account on behalf of a resident, and will accept money from a resident or family member to deposit into the account. The maximum amount allowed in an account at any time is $150.00. Residents can withdraw money from the account Monday to Friday during regular Reception hours.
Wirelss Access
Wireless access is available throughout the Centre for a nominal fee. Residents/families who wish to access this service would need to provide their own computer with wireless capability. A flat monthly fee will be added to the monthly billing statement. Any computer related problems or repairs, other than the actual wireless connection, are the responsibility of the resident/family. Security of the computer and any peripherals are also the responsibility of the resident/family.
A resident laptop is also available for limited general use via the Therapies Department.
