We strongly discourage residents from keeping any items of value, or documents of importance in their rooms. We certainly understand that residents want to keep such things with them because of their sentimental value. However, we cannot guarantee their safety and therefore cannot be responsible for any loss or damage. The resident and/or family must weigh the risk of loss or damage against the benefits of keeping such items in their room.
We also strongly discourage residents from keeping large amounts of cash in their rooms or on their persons when away from their rooms. Again, we cannot be responsible for any loss of money. The Receptionist manages our resident trust fund service. Cash or cheques can be deposited into a resident's trust fund account, and cash withdrawn from it when needed. Also, payment of some personal services that are offered at St. Michael's Centre can be charged directly to this account.
Resident Security
St. Michael's Centre has an electronic alarm system on several key exits throughout the facility. The alarm is linked to a watch like device that is worn by the resident (if appropriate). We also have keypad access to both elevators and on several doors in resident areas. These systems are in place to help maintain the safety of some residents who may wander.
All rooms are equipped with a nurse call system and an activation cord is within reach from both the bed and the toilet.
Emergency Response
Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness activities are co-ordinated through the Environmental Services Department. Fire drills are held regularly. The fire alarm is a loud, pulsating bell-like sound. If the alarm sounds, stay where you are. Procedures are in place for isolating the fire and smoke, and for calling in the Burnaby Fire Department. Staff are responsible for checking all areas of the facility and giving assistance to residents and visitors if evacuation is necessary.
